Yesterday in New Orleans, I had the pleasure of talking with Paul Masvidal of prog-metal masterminds Cynic about their brand of music, the art of experiencing and making music, and a curious album by their musical contemporaries Atheist called "Elements".
I had waited 16 years to see Cynic, and their set at the House of Blues as direct support for Between the Buried And Me was, unbelievably, more than I had hoped for. Cynic's set was an emotional rollercoaster balanced with a tour de force musician's clinic, and it was a personal dream come true for me to witness it. Classics from their albums "Focus" and "Traced in Air" filled the room with relaxing intensity, tied together with moments of spirituality. Not to be missed, as they must be seen to be believed.
You can keep up with Cynic through their official website. Please give them a listen if you haven't already.
